Dan Mangan
Lately, one of the best places to look for up-and-coming indie/alternative/folk musicians has been the great nation of Canada! A surprising number of great bands have recently come out of the sparsely populated country and into the vast American audience. One of these gems is Vancouver-based singer/songwriter Dan Mangan. Having been compared to Nick Drake and The Swell Season, Mangan has a beautiful, woodsy voice and the guitar and songwriting skills to do it justice. His latest album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice, released in 2009, has been one of the most exciting folk albums I have heard in a while. Luckily, he is set to release his next work, Oh Fortune, on September 27th, and I could not be more eager to hear it!

City and Colour
I know I am slightly late hopping on this train, but it has come to my attention that there are still many out there who have not had the pleasure of hearing City and Colour. Dallas Green, frontman of post-hardcore band Alexisonfire has recently left his group to focus on his side project that has become extremely successful, City and Colour. Green is the sole member of City and Colour and has released three albums under the moniker. Unlike in his previous group, Dallas now writes acoustic, folk-inspired tunes, and sings often with a falsetto very similar to that of James Vincent McMorrow. Most recently, in June, Green released Little Hell, the most mature, fully-realized City and Colour album yet, and the first to chart in the U.S. If you are a fan of McMorrow or a folk fanatic in general, this stuff is for you. Enjoy!!

Givers
Givers, a five-piece alt-pop group from Louisiana caught my eye after they gave one of the most exciting, lively shows of the Sasquatch Music Festival earlier this year (See review here). After going out on tour with The Dirty Projectors, one of their primary influences, and releasing an awesome debut album, In Light, available here, the group is developing quite a following and is heading out on their first headlining tour. Their unique sound combines influences from indie jam bands like Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, along with the poppy side of the Dirty Projectors and a little Southern twist. The album is definitely worth getting and it won't disappoint! Enjoy!
